Should I Get a Samsung UN55B6000?

If you are looking for a monster 55 inch TV to take pride of place in your living room, then you have to consider the Samsung UN55B6000, we've researched it for you and provide all the information you need below:

What is it?

The Samsung UN55B6000 is the baby brother of the UN55B8000, yet you save around $600 if you buy this one and you don't lose anything important from the spec, so this has to be the smart choice!

You don't get the 240Hz technology, but then cnet.com said they couldn't tell the difference between the 120Hz and 240Hz models anyway, and you don't get a lot of the internet connectivity like the Yahoo widgets.

You do get the same great size, the same great looks (plus you get the touch of red on this model which you don't on the 8000). You get the same technology to give a top quality picture, and the same LED backlight technology so you can have an ultra slim 55 inch TV (1.2 inches thick at its thickest point) to take center stage in your room.

What do I get for my money?

LED backlighting:
This TV uses LEDs around the edge of the screen and then 'light guides' to get that to where it needs to go, that saves using the bulkier CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) that most other LCD TVs do.

This means you don't have anything behind the screen so they can make it ultra thin (your old TV will look silly compared to this) plus it is up to 40% more energy efficient so you can feel good as you watch your huge TV, knowing you are doing your bit for the planet, and it is reported to give a much better ability to produce pure blacks and white on the screen, giving those dark scenes that extra edge.

Auto Motion Plus 120Hz:
Your standard signal is 60Hz which means it will refresh the image 60 times a second, this technology upscales that to 120Hz by doubling the number of frames using software to work out what should be happening in between the two frames from the normal signal.

This means you get smoother motion in fast scenes, and this TV also has very good anti-judder processing which some people love, and others hate. Anti-judder technology tries to stop any blurring from happening, some people say it makes everything a bit too 'real' though, but you can adjust how much it affects what you watch, or you can turn it off completely if you don't like it.

4ms motion response time:
This is down from the 2ms response time of the 8000 unit, but we'd recommend around 6ms minimum, so this is still a great time. The motion response time is how the TV reacts to fast moving images, with a slower speed you might find things start to jump around when the action heats up in a hockey match or fast paced film.

Audio:
You get 2 x 10W speakers but you are missing the subwoofer that the more expensive model provides. With this size TV you should really be using a home theatre system if you want to get the most out of it though.

Ultra Clear Panel/ Wide Color Enhancer Pro and Game Mode:
The first two pieces of technology help you get the best picture quality you can and give natural skin tones and enhance the color. The 'Game Mode' allows you to speed up the image processing time, enhance the colors and enhance the sound in a way that helps you get the most out of the intense colors and action of the latest computer games.

USB connectivity:
This is only a minor thing really, but some of the cheaper TVs neglect it so it is worth mentioning when a TV does include it. With 2 USB slots then you can connect your camera etc to the TV and watch your videos on it or pictures, you can even listen to MP3s through your TV (good if you have a home theatre system).

How much does it cost?

The UN55B8000 model comes in just shy of $2200 with 42% off at Amazon.com, this model however, the UN55B6000, you can get for just $1,599, a saving of around $600! That is with 52% off at the time of writing at Amazon.com.

What do people think of it?

Well CNET.com gave the UN55B6000 a total of 3.5 stars which is a rating of 'very good', the same as the UN55B8000 received, and they put down the high price as a negative, but the price has gone down a lot since they reviewed it so that is no longer an issue.

On Amazon.com then over 75% of people gave it 4 or 5 stars and absolutely loved it. The main complaints from the people who gave it fewer stars were a problem with the set (go back to Amazon not Samsung if you have a problem after receiving it!) or they mentioned the glow in the corners of the screen. These are the same problems a few people reported on the 8000 model, but the glow problems seems to be a matter of personal taste because if you take out the complaints about receiving a faulty set, then only a handful of people complained about the glow, while the vast majority absolutely love this TV.
